Ceramics Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Tile Size

One advantage of ceramic tiles is that you have many options. Even in artisan-made or designer tiles, there is usually a range of patterns, colors, and even shapes to choose from. Whatever your specifications, you can find ceramic tiles to suit your needs. But after you've chosen the perfect tile design, you still have another important decision to make: What size of tiles should you choose?

There is no right or wrong answer to choosing ceramic tiles. It's entirely a matter of personal preference and the look you're going for in your home. That said, here are some details to consider in making the best decision for your space.

Factors That Influence Your Choice of Tile Size

  1. The Size of Your Room

The size of your tiles can affect the perspective in your room. For example, large tiles in a small room can make the space appear larger. Conversely, small tiles in a large room can give the illusion of a cozier, more intimate space. Balance is key here. You don't want your tiles to be so small that they look out of proportion with the rest of the room, but you also don't want them to be so large that they overwhelm the space.

2. Using the Tiles on the Floor or Walls

Tiles for flooring are typically larger than those used on walls since they need to withstand foot traffic. Of course, you can use smaller tiles on your floor if you want to achieve a particular look. Just be aware that they may require more maintenance since the grout lines are more prone to dirt and debris.

3. The Style of Your Home

The style of your home can also dictate the size of your tiles. For instance, larger tiles might be the way to go if you want to achieve a sleek and modern look. If your space has a rustic vibe, smaller tiles might be a better match. Of course, ultimately, it's up to you to decide what size tile will best fit the overall aesthetic of your home.

4. Your Budget

Your budget is a significant consideration when choosing the right tile size. Smaller tiles are typically less expensive than larger ones. If you're working with a tight budget, smaller tiles would be more practical.

How to Choose the Color of Your Grout

Choosing the pattern, color, and shape of your tiles is one of the most exciting steps in tiling and remodeling. It allows you to be creative and give your space a look and feel that reflects your personality. But an essential part of this process is choosing the color for your grout. It may not be your top priority, but an appropriate color can pull your choices together. This guide will help you select the right shade for your grout.

Why Is Grout Important?

Grout is the substance that fills the space between your tiles and holds them together. It adds strength to your tile installation while providing a way to clean it easily. A well-installed tile job with the correct grout will last for years and still look great.

In other words, grout is both functional and aesthetic. The substance protects your tiles from damage while also adding color and design to your space.

How to Choose the Color

Some general rules for choosing the color of your grout include the following:

1. Choose a Color That Complements Your Tile

Your tiles and grout don't have to match precisely. If you're mixing and matching different colors or styles of tiles, you can still create a cohesive look by choosing complementary colors for your grout. For example, if your tile has a lot of red or orange tones, it might look best with a darker grout color with cooler undertones. On the other hand, if you have a solid-colored tile and want a more dramatic look, choosing a contrasting grout color can help you create a bold statement.

2. Consider Your Overall Design Style

Your choice of grout color should align with your overall design style. For example, choosing white or gray grout may be best if you are going for a modern look. But if an eclectic or retro look is more your style, you may want to choose a color that pops, like red or green.

3. Experiment With Different Colors and Strengths

Once you have an idea of the color family you want, it's often helpful to try out several different colors with varying strengths. Think about how each color will look over your tiles and its effect on the overall appearance. You may also want to play around with different grout finishes, like sanded or un-sanded, as this can affect your color.

There is a wide variety of grout colors

4. Work With a Professional

If you have difficulty choosing the right color for your grout, it's always helpful to work with a professional. A tile contractor will have experience selecting and installing grout and can help you find the match for your project.

The Takeaway

Choosing the color of your grout is an integral part of tiling and remodeling. It adds strength to your installation and visual interest and personality to your space. By following these tips and working with a professional tile contractor, you can choose a color that complements your tiles and overall design style.

How to Mix and Match Ceramic Tiles Like a Pro

With so many colors and styles of ceramic tiles, people may struggle to choose the right combination. If you love more than one design, there’s no need to fret. You can always mix and match ceramic tiles. And nowadays, there is no hard-and-fast rule on matching different styles of ceramic tiles.

Some people adhere to the golden rule in home design, which says that simple always looks better. But that doesn’t work for everyone. There are those who aren’t satisfied with simple and basic tile designs. They prefer a variety of styles but struggle with putting them together for a single space.

Here are some tips for mixing and matching ceramic tiles:

Balance Busy Patterns

Don’t use two to three busy patterns. The rule of thumb is to use patterned tiles with plain tiles. For example, you can use textured penny tiles for the bathroom floor but switch to plain white ceramic tiles for the walls. You can also go for tiles with complementary patterns if you want an accent wall, but don’t fill all the walls with patterned tiles. You can use small glass tiles in different colors for the accent wall and stick to large plain tiles for the other walls.

Experiment With Scale

Mixing and matching tiles is not just about different colors. You can also play around with small- and large-scale patterns. Use at least three shapes of tiles: hexagonal, square, and rectangular. The important thing is to use a monochromatic color if you’re experimenting with scale. Don’t mix and match colors and shapes because your space will look cluttered.

Consider Natural Stone

You can also use natural stones with your ceramic tiles, such as granite and marble. Use granite for your countertop and flooring while sticking to ceramic tiles for the kitchen backsplash. You can do it the other way around as well.

Combine Different Types of Finishes

Ceramic tiles come in matte and glossy finishes, which can be combined. For example, you can use glossy tiles for your living room and matte tiles for your kitchen since glossy kitchen flooring may cause accidents. As long as the colors and scales are cohesive, matte and glossy finishes should work well together.

By combining these two types of finishes, you can combine similar-size tiles and busy patterns.

Use the Same Color but Different Shapes

You can experiment with same color tiles in the bathroom, but by using different shapes, you create a more unique look. For example, if you want an all-white bathroom, enhance the look with different tile shapes. You can use small hexagon tiles for the flooring and rectangular tiles for the wall.

The Takeaway

It may seem overwhelming to match tiles on your own. By asking for recommendations from friends and family, it can be a fun activity. Of course, you will have the final say since you are designing your space.

As you mix and match, don’t hesitate to ask questions and get suggestions from your tile manufacturer or distributor. Their experience in the tiles business will also give you a good perspective on the best combinations for your space.

Picking the Right Tiles for Your Bathroom Renovation

Renovating your bathroom is a big undertaking. Most people see the bathroom as a place where they can relax. If your home is usually noisy with kids and dogs running around, the bathroom is a kind of solace. It’s the only place in your home where no one should bother you. The time you spent there is for yourself.

RIGHT TILES

〰️

RIGHT TILES 〰️

Picking the right tiles is essential

Here’s a few tips for your bathroom renovation

This is why many people prioritize renovating or remodeling the bathroom when they have the budget. And the most important part of the process is picking the tiles because they set the tone for the entire look and feel of the room. The tiles are the first thing you will notice when you enter any room, especially a bathroom

Types of Tiles

Manufactured tiles are divided into two categories: ceramic and porcelain. While the latter is usually a more durable and hard-wearing option for bathroom tiles, ceramic is more affordable. This makes ceramic the tile of choice for most homeowners who want to save some bucks to renovate their bathrooms. And since bathrooms are not a high-traffic area like the living room and kitchen, homeowners usually pick ceramic tiles for the walls and floor.

On the other hand, you can opt for porcelain tiles if you have more budget. These are denser than ceramic tiles, and they are easy to maintain. Most contractors also prefer to use porcelain tiles for the bathroom walls.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles come in either glossy or matte textures. Polished tiles are perfect for small bathrooms because they reflect light, thus making the space feel bigger and brighter. It is also easy to wipe down, so cleaning the bathroom won’t be a chore. However, smears easily show on glossy surfaces, making this a disadvantage of glossy tiles.

Then there are matte tiles. These non-shiny tiles are preferred by homeowners aiming for a natural look with neutral and earth-toned colors. Matte tiles look like natural stones such as cement, stone, and wood, making them the perfect choice if you’re aiming for a nature-inspired theme in the bathroom.

Maintenance

Choose a tile that is easy to maintain. Bathrooms are hard to maintain because of the water, moisture, and other elements that make them accident-prone. However, by choosing the right flooring, you’re already halfway to your goal of having an easy-to-maintain bathroom that’s free from slips and falls.

There’s no need to sacrifice aesthetics for the sake of functionality. Both ceramic and porcelain tiles come in various colors, designs, and shapes, so it’ll be easy for homeowners to pick the one that suits their taste.

Size

Another vital thing to consider is the size of the tiles to be used in the bathroom. If you have a small bathroom, use smaller tiles, too. Using big tiles for a mid-sized bathroom will make it look and feel imbalanced. Always choose the appropriate tile size for any room. You can also consider mosaic tiles if you’re feeling a bit creative.

Conclusion

Consider how you’re going to use the bathroom when you choose the tiles. Your guest bathroom can have textured tiles that are harder to maintain since only a few will use the bathroom. The personal bathroom you use every day should have more practical tiles because it’ll be harder for you to maintain cleanliness. If you choose textured and hard-to-maintain tiles, ensure you have the time and technique to keep them clean.

How to Choose the Right Size Ceramic Tiles

One of the great things about ceramic tile is that there are so many options. As you sort through your choices, you will find yourself selecting colors and styles as well as sizes. There is a vast range of sizes to choose from a few inches across to those several feet across.

To some extent, your choice will be a personal decision. However, you want your ceramic tiles to look good in your space, and not everyone is an interior designer. If you aren’t sure what size of ceramic tiles is ideal for your space, consider the following tips.

Start With the Size of the Space

As a general rule of thumb, if you have a small space, you want smaller tiles. Moreover, if you have a large space, you want bigger tiles. So, most bathrooms would do best with small to medium tiles, while open-floor kitchens, spacious living areas, and big dining rooms will do best with large tiles.

Of course, you can also break these rules to make a space feel larger or smaller. When done right, large tiles can add elegance and spaciousness to a midsize bathroom. Or smaller tiles can give you the ability to create intricate patterns on the floor of your larger space.

Consider Grout Lines

The more tiles you have on your floor, the more grout lines you need to connect the tiles. This is largely an aesthetic consideration. Specifically, if you want a sleek, modern appearance, larger tiles will be a better choice as there will be fewer connections.

However, you may also choose to use grout lines to your advantage and make them part of the design.

The important thing to remember is that the more grout lines that you have, the busier the space is likely to look.

XXL CERAMIC TILES

Choose an Extra lLarge tiles to be installed in small bathroom renovation project to give a WOW effect.

Think About the Shape of the Space and Logistics of Installation

If you want to minimize the number of tiles you need to cut to fit the space, you don’t want to use too large tiles, as they are unlikely to fit your space perfectly. While you should think about this, it should not restrict you.

After all, it is not that hard to cut tiles to the proper shape. Besides, professionals do it all the time. You need to be aware that installation may take a little longer if more tiles need to be cut, which may increase labor costs. Of course, some of that is mitigated because fewer tiles will need to be installed if they are large.

You Can Combine Sizes

If you can’t choose between several sizes of ceramic tiles, consider combining a few sizes. This can create a cool effect or pattern that makes the floor or wall even more visually appealing. However, you will have to do some careful planning to ensure that your chosen sizes work together well. If you do use multiple-size tiles, remember that this will also make your space look busier and potentially smaller than it would with larger tiles.

Is it Possible to Fix Damaged Ceramic Tiles? If So, How?

The combination of beautiful colors and patterns, varying sizes, accessibility, and affordability is why many people choose ceramic tiles as the preferred flooring solution. Made of thin slabs made of clay or other inorganic materials, these thin tiles look gorgeous. Also, once fired and glazed, they’re incredibly durable.

Is_it_Possible_to_Fix_Damaged_Ceramic_Tiles.jpg

Damaged Ceramic Tiles

Why and How

The Most Common Type of Damage

Considering how well ceramic tiles hold up, they are a perfect choice for bathrooms and kitchens. Of course, that doesn’t mean you’re limited to just those two rooms. Although strong, ceramic tiles can get damaged. Most often, this is in the form of cracks.

Dropping Something Heavy

If something heavy gets dropped onto ceramic tile flooring, there’s a chance of it cracking. Now, the first time this happens, you might only notice a slight dent. However, if you drop something heavy again on that same spot, a crack will likely appear.

Subpar Quality Tile

There’s a rating for ceramic tiles that ranges between zero and five. For residential flooring, you want to go with a rating of three whereas you would need a four or five for commercial use.

Always purchase ceramic tiles from a reputable source and buy a little more than needed. Someone with knowledge of the ASTM and ANSI testing standards can guide you to the best product for the application. The quality of the tile you buy plays a significant role in the risk of damage.

Excessive Load

Ceramic tile with a three rating can easily accommodate a stationary load up to 250 pounds of pressure per square inch. Keep that in mind if this is the kind of flooring you want. That means an extra-heavy load could damage the tile.

Improper Installation

Even the installation of new ceramic tiles plays a role in whether they crack soon after. For instance, if an unqualified person installs a ceramic tile over a control joint, it’ll likely crack.

Fixing Damaged Ceramic Tile

The good news is you can fix ceramic tiles yourself. One option is to loosen the grout around a damaged piece, replace it with one of the extra tiles you purchased and then regrout it. That way, you have a perfectly matched tile to use.

There’s another easy fix. Make sure the damaged piece of tile and the area around it is void of any dirt, debris, oil, and water. Then, mix white or clear epoxy. Working carefully but quickly as epoxy sets fast, apply it over the crack. As expected, this works best on smaller cracks.

If you’re not a handy type of person, you can always hire an expert to replace or fix the tile for you. Using similar techniques, your floor will look great in no time.

One important note, if a crack gets subjected to moisture, it’ll probably spread. So, be sure to wipe up any spills immediately. Also, to prevent damage, have the ceramic tile sealed, keep the floor clean, and never use harsh abrasives or chemicals on it.

Innovative Ways to Use Ceramic Tile

When it comes to ceramic tile, most people automatically think of floors. Although that’s an excellent way to transform the appearance of any room, it’s not the only option. With a little bit of creativity, a superior quality product, and professional installation, you can use ceramic tiles in many interesting ways.

Unique Ways to Use Ceramic Tile

innovative_ways_to_use_ceramic.jpeg

The following are some examples of innovative projects using ceramic tile.

  • Walls – While not the most creative option, you can have ceramic tiles installed on interior walls. For instance, you might have one large wall tiled so that it becomes the focal point. You can use tiles of different sizes and colors to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. You could also have contrasting yet complementary tiles installed on all four walls.

  • Fireplace Front and Surrounds – There’s nothing better than a gorgeous fireplace. Unfortunately, many of them don’t have much personality. This is where ceramic tiles can completely change the aesthetics of both the front and surrounds. One possibility is to have ceramic tiles installed to create a flowing design from one side to the other. With so many incredible choices, the sky’s the limit.

  • Replicating a Brick Layout – Especially in a country-style kitchen, you can take things up a notch by replicating a brick layout using a rustic color ceramic tile. For this, you could have a tile backsplash installed along with new flooring. This transformation is unique and stunning.

innovative_ways_to_use_ceramique_tile.png
  • Faux Rug – Large area rugs of high quality cost a significant amount of money. Then, there’s the upkeep, and you have to protect them from damage. A great alternative is for an installer to create a faux area rug using ceramic tiles. For this, you could choose something simple or go all out with an ornate design. When finished, the ceramic tiles will look like a Persian rug but without the need for maintenance. This is a great idea for large rooms and foyers.

  • Liven up a Boring Corridor – Most long corridors have no character. In place of bare walls, have patterned ceramic tile installed on the floor. Immediately, that area of your home will level up in look and feel.

innovative_ways_to_use_ceramic_tile_hallway.png
  • Pure Artistry – If you have a favorite vocal artist, flower, cityscape, hobby, or something else that you enjoy, consider having it created with ceramic tiles. As an example, with black and white ceramic tile, a skilled installer could create a silhouette of a famous person on a white wall. The entire room would then pop.

  • Mosaic Walkway – Remember, ceramic tiles aren’t just for indoor use. You can have tiles installed in outdoor areas as well. A beautiful mosaic walkway leading to your front door would definitely impress.

Start With a Quality Product

Regardless of the innovative way you want to incorporate ceramic tiles into your home, always start with a quality product. By working with a reputable source, not only will you achieve that goal but also have an amazing selection of colors, sizes, shapes, and patterns. What to Know Before Purchasing Ceramic Tile

What to Know Before Purchasing Ceramic Tile

There’s no question that ceramic tile is in a league of its own. Although some people use it to enhance walls, which looks amazing, it’s most commonly selected as a flooring solution.

While this particular type of tile has so much to offer, one thing that everyone appreciates is that it’s 100 percent natural. However, if you want to have ceramic tile installed at your home or business, you need more information to make the best decision.

Ceramic Tile for wall

Should not be installed on floor

Not All Ceramic Tile Is the Same

As with any consumer product, ceramic tile isn’t the same from one manufacturer to another. It all comes down to material and processing quality. So, before buying, make sure you choose a trusted source, one with a history of providing customers with superior quality and affordable products.

Ceramic Tile’s Wear Ratings

Along with buying ceramic tile from a reputable source, you should also pay attention to its wear ratings. Developed by the Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI), this will help you identify the appropriate tile based on where you want it installed.

  • PEI – Class 1 Rating – This ceramic tile is only for walls.

  • PEI – Class 2 Rating – Not only is this tile a good choice for walls but also light traffic areas. Usually called backsplash and mosaic.

  • PEI – Class 3 Rating – Rated for light to moderate traffic, this works great for walls, floors, and countertops.

  • PEI – Class 4 Rating – For moderate to heavy traffic, this ceramic tile called porcelaine is ideal for residential use, as well as light to medium commercial applications.

  • PEI – Class 5 Rating – As the toughest, manufacturers recommend this ceramic tile for heavy to extra-heavy residential and commercial spaces.

Ceramic Tile Comes in Different Sizes

Ceramic tile used as flooring comes in a broad range of sizes. This typically includes tiles 1/2 or 3/4-inch thick and 4x4 inches up to 24x24 inches in diameter. However, you can customize the look of your floors or outdoor space by choosing a different shape. For example, ceramic tile is also available in octagonal, hexagonal, rectangular, and mosaic shapes.

Or Grade 4 or 5 of Ceramic Tile, perfect for your floor

Porosity

When choosing ceramic tile, especially for a kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, or other areas with moisture, along with outdoor applications, the porosity rating is critical. This is the tile’s ratio of airholes to solids. The more airholes, the more moisture it absorbs. In comparison, denser tile absorbs less moisture.

Firing Tile

As part of manufacturing, ceramic tiles go through a firing process. Placed inside a kiln, this includes one of two types of firing: single or double. For single firing, a glaze consisting of liquid enamel or glass gets applied to the tile’s surface. Then, it’s fired just once.

As for the double process, ceramic tiles undergo firing twice. The second time is after the manufacturer adds embellishments or color. Keep in mind that the longer and hotter the firing, the harder ceramic tile becomes. Also, when double-fired, the tile ends up much thicker.

Making the Right Choice

Each one of these factors will make the selection process easier. Whether you want ceramic tile installed for indoor or outdoor applications, the experts at Céramique au Sommet can help you. Give us a call today.

Can You Reuse Ceramic Tile?

As you remove your old tile, you may wonder if you can reuse the tiles you remove. Unfortunately, doing so will not usually work. One main reason for this is that tile is often attached using mortar and epoxy. The mortar becomes another portion of the tile on the wall when it dries and, even if it comes off of the wall or floor unbroken, the bottom will not be level. All of this said, it is unlikely that you’ll be able to reuse ceramic tiles, but it is not entirely impossible. Keep reading to learn more.

Can_You_Reuse_Ceramic_Tile.jpeg

Why Some People Might Want to Reuse Ceramic Tile

If you are replacing just a small section of tile, you may find you wish to reuse the existing ones since it is sometimes hard to find an exact match. Manufacturers often change things, meaning the older designs and styles might no longer be available. Alternately, you might want to try to save a bit of money on the project. If you are taking the time to redo an entire area, however, you may find it’s worth getting a new tile to ensure the best possible result.

The Effort Required

To remove tiles, you will need to place a chisel near the grout line and gently tap it to get the tile loose. It may crack or chip in the process, however. It takes a lot of time and the correct tools, so you may find it better to get new tiles.

If you do want to try to reuse ceramic tiles, you’ll need to clean and re-level them following removal. Once you have removed the tiles, you will need to soak each of the tiles in a cleaning solution and then scrape off the mortar if you want to reuse them. You can then rinse off the tiles and wipe them down. It is best to wipe a warm, wet sponge over the tile’s surface to get the rest of the dust off. You can also use some steel wool to rub over the grout, which may help it come off better. Still, you will want to avoid scratching the surface of the tile itself.

Once you have cleaned the area and there is not any remaining grout, you can give it a final wipe down and let it dry out. However, you will want to inspect the tile since this process may not get all the mortar off. If the tiles are not even, they will not lay consistently.

Another issue with reusing tile is that the ceramic is relatively brittle. Even if you were able to clean them off after removal, they could easily break. Removing tile is relatively tedious, and the process is fairly rigorous, particularly if you want to use them again. Salvaging these tiles is not very typical since they can easily break during the removal process.

Closing Thoughts

When it comes to ceramic tile, you are often better off purchasing new ones. In addition to saving you time, effort, and possible injury, new tiles will look nicer than ones that have been in place for a long time. The right supplier can offer you advice on picking ones that look similar to the old ones you had.

Preventing Your Ceramic Tile from Going Out of Style

Whether you are remodeling a bathroom or a kitchen, you likely are considering adding ceramic tiles to your home. They are durable and come in many patterns and colors. You want the area to look modern and fresh but not too trendy. Otherwise, your new tiles might soon go out of style. That’s why you should try to pick something you will love for many years.

Preventing_Your_Ceramic_Tile_from_Going_Out_of_Style_classic.jpg

Using Neutrals

If you want to keep the area looking great, you might go with neutral colors for your tiles. That way, you don’t have to worry about any shades going out of style. Otherwise, you have to either live with it or take it out again. If you want to add some color, try using some accent pieces in your bathroom. Or you could place a backsplash in the kitchen. You can also use accent paint to style your home.

It is easier to change out the paint color and accessories than redo the tile if it goes out of style. These are fun ways to add some color and bring a trend into your home. Try to avoid using a solid color if you have a larger room. It is also best to avoid using bold colors since these tend to be too trendy.

Use White Tiles

A classic look is subway tiles, which are great for kitchens and bathrooms. They are neutral, but they add a bit of character to your space. The tiles are easy to keep clean, and that is important in a bathroom or kitchen. Try to go for patterns that will last a long time when choosing the tiles.

Patterns are more likely to become dated over time. But that does not mean you can’t pick a great-looking tile. Instead, look for a more subtle pattern that is less likely to go out of style. Consider geometric ones with neutral shades, like gray.

Stay Away from Newer Styles

Avoid styles that look too new since they can be risky. Instead, strike a balance between classic styles and newer ones since you want the area to look modern and fresh. Stay away from trends that are very new or are just around for the season. They might go out of fashion.

Choose Darker Tiles

You might want to get tiles in colors like brown or black, which are more in style. The trend will not go anywhere since these are classic colors. Plus, dark colors are fresher and not as expected. They are classic, and the neutrals look great anywhere. Still, you’ll want to be careful. You don’t want to tile your whole room with dark colors since it can look too dark. You might choose to use them with lighter shades, as well.

Closing Thoughts

There are several ways you can prevent your ceramic tiles from going out of style. Following these tips will ensure you have a fabulous-looking home for a long time to come.

Ensuring Your Ceramic Flooring Lasts

Unlike many other types of flooring, ceramic flooring might need more maintenance, so it will last for a long time. It is best to seal the floors to ensure it lasts. That will keep them in good condition.

Removing Any Stains

ensuring_ceramic_flooring_last_cleaning_grout.jpg

Even if your ceramic flooring does not look like it, it can be fairly porous. Porcelain tiles are not porous. That means that if you spill liquid on the floor, it might go through the tiles. That can result in a stain if you do not clean it up right away.

ensuring_your_ceramic_flooring_last_pro_net_II.jpg

But you might not get to a spill in time, and it might develop into a stain. As soon as you notice a stain, use a tile and grout cleaner kitchen (ex: Pronet II) or use bleach to clean the spot. Allow the bleach to sit for a few minutes, and then scrub it. You can use a stronger cleaner if the stain is still there.

You can use muriatic acid to clean the most stubborn stains. Of course, you will need to use safety gear, such as gloves, goggles, and masks. Ensure that you ventilate the room while you are working with muriatic acid. Add about six parts of water to about four parts of the acid. Remember that it is very corrosive, so you will need to take extra care when you are using it.

ensuring_your_ceramic_flooring_last_pro_efflonet.jpg

The mixture can be used to clean away any stains on your ceramic floor. You can use an old toothbrush for the job. When you are done, you should rinse the area. Follow the instructions on the package to get rid of any remaining acid.

Cleaning the Grout

If there are stains on the grout, you can clean it with Proma Pronet II or Efflonet. You can also try using muriatic acid. But if that does not work, you might have to add some more grout. Use a grout remover to get rid of what you have before applying a new one. You will notice an indentation in the area once the existing grout is gone.

Look for grout that is the same color as what you have. Then read the package instructions to learn how to install it. Using a wet sponge, clean up the area once you’re finished. You can work with the flooring again once the grout is dry.  You can also do a paste by mixing Peroxide Hydrogen and Baking Soda and use a toothbrush.

Advanced Cleaning

By combining together an equal amount of white vinegar and warm water, you can ensure that your floor will be at its finest. Once you have the perfect shine, dry the floor with a microfibre towel. Pat the floor until it is completely dry. Once you clean your ceramic tile floor this way, all that it should require is a simple sweeping and mopping once a day for about a week using Projet cleaner.

The Advantages of Using Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles can be extremely versatile, and there are a lot of advantages associated with the material. For instance, it can easily resist stains or water. Once you have a better understanding of the ins and outs of ceramic tile, you can make a better decision about your flooring. Keep reading to find out more about the advantages of having ceramic tile placed in your house.

Durability of the Tile

Ceramic tile is a highly resistant surface, and it is very tough. That means that it is often hard for cracks to develop. If you install it right and with the right maintenance, you can expect it to last for a couple of decades. In case one or two of your tiles do not last as long, it is not that hard to replace them.

Resistance to Water

If you choose ceramic flooring tiles with a glaze on them, you will also have a protective surface to prevent water issues. That way, neither stains nor water will have an impact on the tile. If you get a glazed tile, it is also good for humid weather. Plus, you can use them in areas exposed to more water, such as the laundry room or bathroom.

Of course, you can also get non-glazed tiles. They might need to be sealed if you do not want them damaged by water. It is also a good idea to seal the grout between each of the tiles. That can keep out the water, so it does not cause the area to get moldy. It also makes it easier for you to keep them clean.

Avoiding Allergies

The surface of your ceramic tiles will be very hard. That means you do not need to worry about allergies because you won’t get exposed to fibers like those from rugs. Plus, not as much dust and other dirt are likely to build up on the surface of your ceramic flooring. It also means that you will not need to worry about pollen or animal hair on the surface. That will make the air easier for you to breathe if you have allergies.

Even if you do not have any allergies, it can be more hygienic for you to have hard floors. Even regular vacuuming does not get every last bit of dust off the carpet, and you might still have to shampoo the floor. But with ceramic tiles, it is easy to ensure cleanliness.

Easy Tile Maintenance

It is not that hard for you to care for your ceramic floors. Liquids, dirt, and other stains are only on the surface of the tiles. That means that it is not hard to simply wipe up any liquid issues. You can also choose to either vacuum or sweep the surface of the flooring.

Closing Thoughts

There are many advantages to having ceramic tiles in your home. Understanding the benefits can help you make a more informed decision about whether the material is right for your flooring.

Is There a Difference Between Ceramic and Porcelain?

If you are thinking about adding tile to your home, you might be thinking about both porcelain and ceramic. However, you might not know the differences between the two of them. Each kind is versatile and elegant. You can use them for floors, but they are also perfect for backsplashes or walls. Plus, they come in many different designs and colors, allowing you to create something truly unique. Therefore, it is critical to do your research and learn more about the differences between the two of them.

Telling the Difference

Often, porcelain and ceramic look the same. It can be difficult to differentiate them at first glance. Each kind of tile is fired in a kiln and made from clay. However, think of porcelain as being a kind of ceramic. The clay you can find in porcelain is often denser, meaning that a higher temperate is needed to fire it. The difference means that each kind of tile has a unique look to it.

The Benefits of Ceramic Tile

You can find a range of different kinds of ceramic tiles. You might choose to get a classic, simple tile, or a more decorative one. Plus, you can also find modern designs. Often, ceramic tile is not as expensive because of the processes and materials used to make the tile.

Some people like the fact that you can find textured types of ceramic tile. That makes it more visually interesting, giving it a bit of dimension. You might find ones that have wavy shapes or ripples in them.

It is often easier to work with ceramic tile. It can be easier for you to cut, so if you want to make your own project, you can do it yourself. Plus, ceramic can be a better fit if you want to make a more decorative design, such as creating a backsplash.

The Advantages of Porcelain

The main difference between the two types of tile is in the process used to create them. Porcelain is often made at a higher temperature and goes in the kiln for longer. That means that it is often more durable because of how dense it is. And it will not wear out as quickly as other kinds of tile. So, it is perfect to use either inside or outdoors.

Porcelain also has an even color, meaning it might be harder to tell if there is a small chip in it. Finally, porcelain can resist water well, making it a perfect option to use in bathrooms, kitchens, and around pools or hot tubs. Ceramic can absorb water easier, so you might want to choose porcelain if you will be using the tile near anything wet.

Closing Thoughts

Both ceramic tile and porcelain are excellent options when it comes to decorating your home. If you are trying to decide between the two, then consider your decorating needs. You’ll want to consider the appearance of the tile, its durability, and resistance to water.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Caring for Ceramic

Many homeowners love to have ceramic because of how easy it is to maintain. Plus, it can look beautiful, and you have many options when it comes to picking the right type of flooring. However, you will want to be careful when caring for it. You need to take some specific steps to help it last as long as possible. That can help you to protect your investment.

Clean your tile and grout with the right ceramic products

Clean your tile and grout with the right ceramic products

Do Clean Your Tiles as Much as Possible

It is not hard to clean your ceramic using a bit of soap and water. But use a tile cleaning product like Proma Pro Net II. It is a good idea to vacuum your floors each week before you mop the area. That can prevent dust from building up. You might choose to use a mop with microfiber material so that you don’t move the dirt to the grout between the tiles. You can also choose to use an old-fashioned mop and bucket, but you will want to make sure that you replace the water as soon as it starts to look dirty.

Don’t neglect the grout either. It can collect dust and dirt, so you will want to clean frequently. That will prevent too much from building up. It is a good idea to use vacuums that have gentle attachments. You also want to rinse the floor after you mop it. Use clean water for that. Remember, you will need to dry the area as well since mold can still grow on ceramic.

Don’t Avoid Cleaning the Grout

It is easy to avoid cleaning your grout because of the work involved. But if you leave the dust too long, it might permanently stain the area. Instead, consider using a grout cleaner such as Proma Efflonet. You can also use a homemade substitute with dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. Use a small brush, such as a dedicated toothbrush, for scrubbing the area. If you want to make the job easier, consider spot-cleaning areas as soon as you notice them.

Don’t Allow Spills to Sit

If you do not clean up messes right away, they can start to stain the grout. Depending on the type of floor, a spill might also ruin the grout and prevent it from functioning correctly. No matter how big of a spill you have, it is a good idea to clean it as soon as you notice it. Use a cloth to absorb any liquid, and then use a bit of soap and water to clean anything else up.

Closing Thoughts

Ceramic tile is a great way to decorate your home and add a little something to it. However, you will want to be careful that you are caring for it correctly. For example, make sure that you protect it from scratches from your furniture. Area rugs can protect areas where people often walk. And cleaning it regularly is always a must. If you do not, then it will not last for as long. However, with the right care, ceramic can last for a long time to come. Call your Tile Expert to discuss your ceramic maintenance products.

Make A Statement With Mosaic Ceramic Tiles

If you’re thinking about updating and renovating your home, consider using mosaic tiles to make a personal and unique statement to any room. Using mosaics in interior design has always been fashionable and even more so now that the trend in 2020 is to be bold and colourful.

Here are a few tips to incorporate mosaic ceramic tiles in your home renovation:

1. Mosaic Colour and Pattern

One of the main reasons that mosaic ceramic tiles are so easy to decorate with is that they come in a wide variety of colours and patterns. For a more conservative look use tiles in soft colours with a simple pattern. Be bold and daring by choosing bright and colourful tiles with interesting patterns. There are no rules to using mosaics – mix and match until you find a design that inspires you.

2. Bathroom Feature Wall

Make_A_Statement_With_Mosaic_Ceramic_Tiles_bathroom.png

One of the classic areas of your home to use mosaic tiles is in the bathroom. Mosaic tiles can be installed on one main wall to add a dramatic and sophisticated style. Another option is to tile the entire wall behind a freestanding bathtub so that it quickly becomes the focal point of the room. Other areas to tile as a feature wall include behind the vanity as a backsplash or on a full shower wall.

3. Small Tiles for a Unique Pattern

Small mosaic tiles can bring an old-world charm to a room and allow you to be as expressive as you want. Both miniature mosaic squares and tiny hexagon tiles are back in vogue this year in a big way. A great option is to use larger ceramic tiles around the outside edge of the wall, with smaller mosaic tiles in the centre as a main area of focus. If you want to be really creative, come up with an elaborate design using bright and colourful tiles laid out in an intricate layout.

4. Mosaic Flooring

Mosaic tiles aren’t just for walls – use ceramic tiles on the floor in creative ways in bathrooms, hallways, kitchens, and in the entryway to your home. Depending on your style, installing tiles in a basic square pattern will give a room a balanced look while laying mosaics in a geometric design can give a more modern feel. For shorter hallways, mosaic tiles in a herringbone pattern can elongate the hall as your eye travels along the tiles.

5. Kitchens with Character

Most families spend more time in the kitchen than in any other room in their home. Using small or large ceramic mosaic tiles as a full backsplash is a good way to add character and dimension without remodeling the entire room. Mosaics can also tie together all the colours and finishes in your kitchen when you use similar colour tones. Consider adding a few mosaic tiles into your kitchen flooring to tie the theme in throughout the room.

No matter how you want to use mosaics in your home, the experts at Céramique au Sommet have the knowledge and skills to help you make the right choice in ceramic tiling.

Sophistication With Ceramic Tiles

Designing décor that’s sophisticated and stylish is at the top of every homeowner’s list when renovating all or a portion of their home. One way to achieve this sophistication is by using ceramic tiles in one or more rooms. Kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, and family rooms can all be transformed by adding ceramic tile to floors, walls, and countertops. Other rooms that benefit from the look of tile include entryways, hallways, and any outdoor spaces.

Classic Elegance

If you’re aiming for a look of classic elegance, use bigger sized tiles in large formats. You’ll get a feeling of continuity with those longer straight lines. Choose ceramic tiles in neutral colours, such as light and slate grey, when you want to define a space to look sleek and spacious. This décor tip is ideal for larger bathrooms with longer vanities. Use can also use tile on the floor, in the shower, and as a backsplash in smaller bathrooms.

Sophistication_With_Ceramic_Tiles.png

You can easily take this sleek look into the kitchen. No matter what your budget, installing larger white ceramic tiles behind countertops can give a crisp accent to a contemporary kitchen that’s looking a little dull.

Patterned Ceramic Flooring

Patterns are back in vogue and tiles are no exception. Patterned ceramic flooring will quickly turn a room into a show stopper. You can achieve pattern in two ways: in the formation of the tiles or by choosing patterned tiles.

Instead of laying tile in a symmetrical fashion, use a diagonal or herringbone layout. Then choose grout in a contrasting colour to make a bold statement

Patterned tiles give you a unique look no matter how they’re laid. Choose tiles that are brightly coloured with an interesting pattern that matches the rest of the room décor. Or opt for two or three tile colours and install them in a unique layout that fits into the shape and size of the room. This is a good option for bathrooms, where you can be a little more daring when it comes to colour choices.

Black and White Textured Tiles

When you’re looking for a fun and exciting look, try the playful patterns of black and white textured ceramic tiles. Available in a variety of patterns and shapes, such as polka-dots and white and black penny round, you can turn any room into a modern and sophisticated space. Be even more bold and daring by mixing and matching these patterned and textured tiles for a completely unique décor in family rooms and your home office.

Sophisticated Outdoor Space

Don’t forget to spruce up your outdoor space with ceramic tiles. Good options are wood-look or concrete-look tiles that give you the cooling effect of ceramic combined with its durability and functionality. Use tiles on the patio, around the firepit or pool, and on outdoor kitchen countertops. For even more style, choose mosaic style ceramic tiles to give the outdoors a splash of the Mediterranean. Blending together colour options such as deep blues and vivid greens gives any outdoor area a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Warmth And Elegance With Porcelain Tiles

One of the biggest home decorating trends in 2020 is using porcelain tiles to create warmth and elegance throughout your home. Both affordable, beautiful, and durable, porcelain can be used in any room to achieve a unique look and style.

Wood-look Tiles

If you like the look of wooden flooring but want the durability of porcelain, a great option is wood-look tiles. These tiles look authentic and can have soft muted tones that make a room feel warm and cozy. One of the biggest advantages for wood-look porcelain tiles is that they’re easy to care for and can withstand high traffic areas where they’re exposed to a lot of wear and tear.

You’ll have a wide range of colour and design to choose from, including tiles that have the exact veining of a dark hardwood or those with the finer graining of a lighter wood. For your next home reno consider using wood-look porcelain tiles in entryways, hallways, or the mudroom.

Porcelain for the Laundry

Although one of the most functional rooms, your laundry room doesn’t have to look dull and boring. Why not create a space that’s bright with a vibrant style? One of the ways to achieve this is by using porcelain tiling, which is water-resistant in a room that’s prone to moisture and accidental water spills.

For smaller laundry room floors, opt for either a light solid colour or geometric patterns to make the room appear brighter and larger. Rooms that are bigger can be tiled with porcelain in interesting patterns and shapes.

Don’t forget the walls and backsplash. White porcelain subway tiles will give the room a modern twist that looks sleek and sophisticated.

The Look of Travertine

Travertine flooring is very distinctive, with its wide variation of natural colours and warm tones such as beige, brown, and taupe. For many homeowners who love the look of this stone, price is often a deterrent to using it in their home. With travertine-style porcelain it’s now possible to achieve a realistic look that’s both affordable and water and stain-resistant.

warmth_and_elegance_porcelaine_tiles_travertine.png

Another advantage to travertine-look porcelain tiles is that they can be installed with the same grout length and layout as natural travertine – so much so that no one will know the difference!

Fabric-look Porcelain

Another common trend in interior decorating is using fabric-like tiles on the walls. Linen-look porcelain tiles bring a lot of personality to a room without the hassle and impracticality of using actual fabric. These fabric-look tiles come in a wide variety of colour tones making it easy for you to mix and match any design.

For larger rooms, choose a porcelain tile for the wall with a soft grey fabric pattern – then combine this with a light-coloured grout in a matching grey tone for a seamless and flowing look.

Linen-look porcelain tiles work just as well in small rooms. Choose smaller tiles with a classic cross-stitch pattern to mimic the exact look of real fabric. You’ll be able to create a timeless look that’s relaxing and soothing.

Mosaic Ceramic Tiles Add Design And Flair

Mosaic Ceramic Tiles Add Design And Flair

Using ceramic mosaic tiles is a great way to update and put your own design style into any room in your home. Always trending, mosaic tiles are both beautiful and durable and can be used in kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms, and hallways. Using different styles, sizes, and layouts you can use mosaic tiles on walls and floors or as an accent around fireplaces.

Historically, small mosaic tiles were carefully applied one by one to create a unique pattern. While you can still apply larger mosaic tiles using this method, smaller tiles are also available as sheets, making it possible and much easier for you to decorate larger surfaces.

Love the look of mosaic tiles but not sure where to use them in your home? Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

Vestibules and Hallways

The first thing people see when they enter your home is the front entry and hallway. Laying ceramic tiles in the vestibule and in hallways is a good way to make a unique design statement. Considering using hexagonal mosaic tiles to bring an open look and feel to smaller areas.

Living and Family Rooms

Why not brighten up your living or family room with a feature wall using colourful glass mosaic tiles? These glass tiles are glossy and shiny and when the light shines off them, can make any boring room come alive. Glass mosaics can also add a bit of texture to a room, giving it a modern touch. If tiling a complete wall seems overwhelming you have the option of tiling a smaller section, such a backdrop on the wall above a seating area.

Kitchen Backsplash

Mosaic tiles are often used as a backsplash on kitchen walls. Use tiles that match the colour and design of the rest of the kitchen or be bold and use contrasting colours to create a strong visual effect. Another way to use ceramic mosaic tiles in the kitchen is to extend the backsplash up to the cabinets. This extension of mosaic tiling can add a unique decorate element to smaller kitchens, elongating the wall area.

Dining Room

An often forgotten room is the dining room. If you’ve added a mosaic backsplash to your kitchen, using the same mosaic tiles in the dining room is a way to create a visual connection between the two rooms. Or tile one wall of the dining room using embossed mosaic tiles to create a spacious focal point.

Bathroom

One way to take your boring bathroom and give it a contemporary look is by covering the floor or a complete wall with mosaic tiles. One of the current trends for bathrooms is to use geometric mosaic shapes in either large or small sizes. Try to use tiles in the same colour palette to create a sense of unity throughout the room.

Ceramic Flooring: 6 Patterns For Any Room

Ceramic Flooring: 6 Patterns For Any Room

You’ve finally chosen the perfect style and color of ceramic tile to update the look in that room you’ve been dying to renovate. Whether it’s the kitchen, living room, bedroom, or bathroom, ceramic tile is a great way to change the look and feel of your home décor.

But now you’ve got one more decision to make – installing your ceramic flooring in a pattern that’s best going to complement the room. Consider one of these 6 tile layout patterns to take any room from boring to exciting:

1. Straight lay pattern

The easiest tile pattern is a straight lay. Ideal for smaller rooms that you want to make feel bigger, the straight long lines of tile and grout will result in a modern design that draws the eye outward in all directions. You can use a straight lay pattern for almost any size of tile, from square to subway to plank shape.

2. Diagonal tile pattern

Take the straight lay pattern and turn it 45 degrees and you have the diagonal pattern. Also known as a diamond pattern, laying tiles down diagonally can make a room seem wider with a more visual flooring impact. This classic pattern can be used with any shape of tile – when using small square ceramic tiles, consider using a darker colored grout to create more contrast.

3. Basketweave floor pattern

Use the basketweave pattern in small rooms, such as the bathroom or a short, narrow hallway. Getting its name from baskets that have been woven with interlacing fibers, the basketweave pattern results in an intricate floor design that becomes the focal point of the room. Tile shapes that work best with this layout are square and rectangular tiles – use two colors in an alternating pattern to add even more contrast and visual appeal.

4. Windmill pattern

Using four rectangular tiles and laying them out in a frame around a small square tile will give you a windmill pattern. By using smaller tiles, you can add a mosaic look to a room, creating a visual pattern that’s pleasing to the eye. Consider using lighter colored rectangle tiles with a darker shade for the center square when you want to make a room seem larger. For bigger rooms, such as the kitchen, a larger scale windmill layout with bigger tiles will give the area a cozy atmosphere.

5. Running bond tile pattern

The running bond layout is created by placing each tile edge at the center of the tile above and below. The resulting pattern gives a room a continuous and streamlined flow from corner to corner. This tile layout works well with grout in a contrasting lighter or darker color to add even more interest to ceramic flooring.

6. Checkerboard layout

To achieve a checkerboard look you’ll need to use tiles of two different colors. Lay out the tiles in a diagonal or alternating straight pattern to give a room a dramatic makeover. While you’ll often see the checkerboard pattern used with black and white tiles, don’t this limit you. Other great color combinations can be created using two different shades of blues, greens, or browns.

Choosing The Best Tile Shape For Your Home Reno

Choosing The Best Tile Shape For Your Home Reno

Using ceramic tile in your home renovation opens up all kinds of creative design possibilities. But whether you’ve decided to use tile on floors, as a backsplash in the kitchen, or in the bathroom, it can be confusing navigating your way through all the different types of available tile shapes. Making your choice is easier when you break down tile shapes into these five categories:

Square tile

Still one of the most popular tile shapes, square ceramic tiles come in all sizes. Easy to work with, tiling walls, floors, and shower stalls with block tiles results in a clean and streamlined look. Mixing and matching colored square tiles creates a more interesting design, quickly taking a room from boring to exciting. Play even more with design by using different sized square tiles in the bathroom or kitchen.

Mosaic tile

Commonly used for elaborate tile designs, don’t be intimidated by mosaic tiles. These tiles are typically a small square shape, from 2 inches down to a ½-inch. Mosaic ceramic tiles come in a wide variety of patterns and colors and are ideal for mixing together to create bold splashes of color on bathroom walls and on the floor. If you’re tiling a small room, consider using mosaic tiles to border larger square tiles to create a unique layout.

Penny tile

First seen in the early 1900’s, penny tiles are small in shape, with standard size of ¾ inches up to 1-inch. These tiles can be used on both walls and floors, giving any room a contemporary style. Often seen in black and white for a classic look, penny tiles are now available in a wide range of patterns and colors. Stick to one basic color for an even and linear look or incorporate a random color and pattern into your home reno when you’re going for a bolder look.

Subway tile

One of the biggest trends in home design for 2020 is subway tiles. These rectangular tiles come in a variety of different sizes, with widths from 1-inch up to four inches and lengths from 4-inch to 16 inches.  While subway tiles are typically used on bathroom walls and as backsplash in the kitchen, many home designers are using them on kitchen, bathroom, living room, and hallway floors. If you want to make a room look more spacious, choosing larger sized subway tiles can create a longer and straight design.

Plank tile

Another new tile shape that’s trending is the plank tile for use in flooring. Using the latest technology, ceramic tiles can be manufactured with patterns to make them look like natural hardwood or stone. Different from subway tiles, plank tiles are wider and longer, with widths from 4-inch up to nine inches and lengths from 12-inch to 28 inches. Best used in a medium to large space, you can create interesting patterns with plank tiles by laying them in a herringbone or basket weave pattern.
